The Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) and its follow-up AREDS2 study confirmed that vitamins A (Lutein), C, E, and Zinc can slow the progression of macular degeneration in some patients. Lutein, in particular, was shown to be as effective as Beta Carotene but better tolerated. Antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, E, and minerals like Zinc and Selenium support overall bodily functions, including the immune and circulatory systems. Studies also suggest vitamins C and E may reduce cataract formation. A 1998 study in Ophthalmology found that regular use of multivitamins reduced the risk of cataracts by one third, while Vitamin E alone halved the risk.
